Yoga for People Living with or Recovering from Cancer

yoga for cancerAs a Yoga Therapist I work with people with a variety of physical and mental health needs on a daily basis. My work in the complex field of cancer, found me when I least expected it. Increasing numbers of students attending my yoga classes, along with family members, began to approach me for help, having received a diagnosis of cancer. Of course, with 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960, predicted to receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, this is not surprising.

Over the past 5 years my special interest and experience in working with people living with cancer has grown. I have taken specific trainings with both Tari Prinster and Cheryl Fenner Brown which has added to my pre existing knowledge as a former health and social care professional, yoga teacher and yoga therapist.

After a number of years working with groups, my interest now lies in working therapeutically with individuals as they make their way through their personal 'experience' of cancer.

The yoga therapy I offer is, where possible, evidence based and always specific to each individual.

Yoga therapy may include physical yoga, and movement practices, breathwork, mindfulness, relaxation yoga nidra and allied practices. Together, we will devise a 'therapy plan' to address your specific needs. Just a few examples of how yoga therapy can help you if you have cancer are:

  • Help address some of the side effects of cancer treatments (such as fatigue, joint and bone pain, sleep issues, digestive disturbances, lymphoedema and cording)
  • Build strength pre or post surgery
  • Boosting your emotional resilience
  • Supporting the maintenance of your immune system
  • Improving peripheral neuropathy

It is my overall aim to assist you in finding ease in your physical and emotional body as you journey through treatment and recovery. Practices may be gentle and restorative or more strengthening with  support and modifications as appropriate.

I work with clients and staff of the Aurora Wellbeing Centre team as a yoga therapist and also offer one to one private consultations providing individual support through yoga and yoga therapy. I would love to hear from you, if you are looking for informed, supportive and compassionate 'yoga therapy' .
